Petoskey Stone Hunting

The Petoskey Stone is Michigan’s state stone, distinguished by a unique hexagonal pattern that can be found on the stone’s surface. This pattern comes from the fossilized remains of coral polyps that lived about 350 million years ago. Today, these stones are a fun, sometimes challenging souvenir to search for along the Petoskey Area’s lakeshore.

Petoskey Stones are found wherever rocks turn up throughout the area and are most easily found when wet. However, some of the best hunting places are the beaches at Bayfront Park and Magnus Park – City Beach.
