  • Holland

Saugatuck is a small artsy town along the southwestern shores of Michigan, often referred to as "the art coast of Michigan." With a population slightly over 1,000 people, this tiny region offers old fashioned streets lined with quaint gift shops and has several one of a kind inns, rather than chain motels. Considered one of Michigan's best resort towns, Saugatuck has a number of art galleries and shopping options as well as a state park with fourteen miles of trails and a stretch of undeveloped beach.

  • Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, population 80,000, is home to Western Michigan University as well as Kalamazoo College. It boasts a diverse population that generates a metropolitan feel in a smaller scale city. Kalamazoo features historic neighborhood districts, including South Street Historic District and Stuart Avenue Historic District. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts holds a collection of 20th century American art, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center offers trails, an arboretum, and various nature exhibits.

  • Lansing

Lansing is the state capital of Michigan and home to huge Michigan State University. The University offers the public an art museum, a history museum of the university and the state, and a planetarium. With a population of around 120,000, Lansing is a substantial sized city offering up tours of the State Capital, riverboat cruises and a number of galleries and museum. For outdoor enthusiasts, Lansing has three nature centers, as well as the Riverfront Park and Trail.

  • Manistee National Forest

Manistee National Forest is located between Manistee and Muskegon. It contains nearly a half million acres of beaches and woods, as well as the Pine and Pere Marquette Rivers. The Manistee River Trail is a ten-mile route along the east bank of the Manistee River. Trout and salmon populate the waters and the navigable part of the river stretches on for over forty miles. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 3,500 acres of dunes and dune forest.
