Ironwood, Michigan Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Ironwood is strategically located along the way to the great outdoor wilds found in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Once a mining town, Ironwood has a small population of around 16,000 and is close to several big ticket attractions including Big Powderhorn Mountain and the Ottawa National Forest.

Big Powderhorn Mountain and Blackjack Ski Resorts are two nearby ski destinations with a combined total of over 40 runs. Southeast of these two resorts is the largest in the area, Indianhead Ski Resort, with 22 runs. Superior Falls is another nearby natural attraction?a 40 foot fall on the fast moving Montreal River.

The Ottawa National Forest, covering nearly 1 million acres of land is just east of Ironwood. The forest houses over 400 lakes, 27 campgrounds, two mountain ranges (the Menominee Range and the Huron Mountains) and several rivers. The Black River winds through the forest, and is the site of seven waterfalls?two of which are the Chippewa and Algonquin Falls, just north of Bessemer. The forest is vast and therefore can accommodate any outdoor lover's tastes, from mountain biking in either of the mountain ranges, to camping, hiking, fishing or simply taking in the panoramic views of the forest.

Ironwood is located on the border of Michigan and Wisconsin. It is in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula nestled along the Montreal River.
