Heritage Drive

Basics
Length:
15 miles (24 km)
Time:
Allow 2 to 3 hours to tour this byway.

Description

The Heritage Drive Scenic Byway offers beautiful fall foliage, made up of a mix of both hardwood trees, giant hemlocks, and pines. Along this road visitors will find historic points, such as Native American archaeological sites and military routes from the Civil War. Amongst freshwater lakes and northern hardwoods and pines, this route offers the chance for hiking along nature trails and places to picnic.

Once known as the Military Road, the byway was built through the Nicolet National Forest to transport guns, ammunition, and troops north in case of English invasion from Canada. The road was used primarily by traders, early settlers, loggers, and Indians. It is still used extensively as it winds through scenic North Country.

The Heritage Drive is truly a byway rich with history and beautiful scenery, and fall is an especially good time to visit the leaves changing color.
