Beaver Island, Michigan Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Beaver Island is a very low key, lightly populated island in Lake Michigan. It is located 18 miles from the shore so the only method of arrival is by boat or Island Airways; a ten seat plane making trips between Charlevoix and the island. Beaver Island was originated by Irish immigrants and overrun by Mormon settlers, then re-taken by the Irish, whose progeny still reside there.

The only town on the island is St. James, in the northernmost tip. There is a bookstore, a bar, a toy museum and a marine museum in the town, all showcasing the history of the island. At the southern end, is the Beaver Head Light, guiding boaters into the shore from the mainland.

There are lakes within the island, ample with fish, including Lake Geneserath, Egg Lake, Fox Lake and Barney's Lake. Hiking and campgrounds are also located on Beaver Island and the beaches are some of the most remote and picturesque in the lake region.

Beaver Island is located on Lake Michigan, approximately 18 miles northwest of Charlevoix.
