Hiawatha Forest National Fish Hatchery

The Pendills Creek/Hiawatha Forest National Fish Hatchery Complex was established in 1951. The hatchery complex is responsible for parts of Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. Our mission includes rearing lake trout as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Program; providing environmental education; providing eggs for other hatcheries, research, and the astroturf program - the astroturf program uses astroturf as a substrate for eggs, which are then placed in various locations in lakes Michigan and Huron. Over 38,000 visitors come every year and the hatchery provides fishery education and hatchery tours.
